Neurotechnology startup Paradromics has successfully implanted and tested its brain-computer interface in a human patient for the first time. The procedure, conducted on May 14th at the University of Michigan, involved placing a sub-penny-sized chip on the brain of an epilepsy patient during routine surgery. The device recorded neural activity for 10-15 minutes using ultra-fine needles capable of capturing signals from individual neurons.

The milestone comes less than four months after Paradromics secured funding from Saudi Arabia’s Neom. While Neuralink dominates headlines in the brain-computer interface space, Paradromics claims its technology leads in data quality and longevity. The company plans to initiate clinical trials later this year pending regulatory approval, focusing on long-term safety and human applications for motor neuron disorders.

Neurosurgeon Matthew Willsey performed the implantation under the clinical supervision of Dr. Oren Sagher. Paradromics’ approach demonstrates the accelerating convergence of neuroscience and computing—a trend with implications for both medical therapeutics and future human-machine integration.
